That was probably just something to tease the fans about time travel. ...Lost is more fun when unspoiled... That said, I think this whole episode was, and the finale will be an extension of, the idea that it's that characters trying to change the past that actually sets the incident in motion (fate vs free will). They think they're doing something different, like shooting Ben, but it was actually always supposed to happen this way. So Jack is probably going to cause the incident when trying to prevent it. The X-factor in all this, of course, is Desmond.
